GNoSR LOCOMOTIVES - BR YEARS

BRITISH RAILWAYS

From the beginning of 1948 the railways of Britain lost their separate identity and became merged in one national system. Those of the LNER were allocated the numbers 60000-79999 - and the former engines from the GNoSR had the prefix 6 added to the new LNER numbers allocated in 1946. The original LNER numbers are shown in brackets. Some of the engines did not survive long enough to carry their new numbers - but the figures below show that a total of 43 former Great North engines survived to be listed in Ian Allan's ABC of British Locomotives for 1948. By the summer of 1950, a further three D41s had disappeared from the list - 62234, 62235 and 62240 - with all the remaining engines allocated to Kittybrewster or Keith - the engine sheds on the GNoSR which became part of the new Scottish Region of British Railways:
